Words For When You Make A Different Choice
Choosing to care for your family differently than the women before you did is not a betrayal of them.
Choosing to care for your family differently than the women before you did is not a betrayal of them. It usually means you are building a version of daughtering that you can actually sustain. These scripts are for the moments when you have made a different choice, and you need to say it. As always, change the wording so it sounds like you, and fill in the blanks with your own specifics.

When you tell your mother you are doing it differently.
You are not criticizing her choices. You are saying that yours will look different.
"I know you gave everything to this family, and I saw how hard you worked. I love you, and I am going to do some of this differently than you did. That is not me saying you were wrong. It is me choosing what works for my life."
When you share that you have decided not to do something.
You do not owe a long defense. Say the decision clearly, once.
"I have thought about this a lot, and I have decided I am not going to [specific task]. I know that may be disappointing to hear. I wanted to tell you directly so we can come up with a different plan."
When your mother is disappointed in you
Her disappointment is real, and it does not mean you made the wrong choice.
"I can see you are disappointed, and I understand why. I am not trying to hurt you. I still love you, and this is the choice I need to make."
When she attempts to use guilt to change your mind.
"After everything I did for you," or "A good daughter would never."
"I hear that this matters to you, and I love you. I also cannot do [specific request]. If there is a way to solve this together, let’s work on it."
When you want to affirm the relationship while still making a different choice.
You can make a different choice and stay connected.
"Nothing about this changes how much I love you or how much I want you in my life. I am just doing this part in a way that I can actually keep up. I want to be here for you for the long run, and this is how I can do that."
When you need to end the conversation without giving in.
You are allowed to stop the conversation.
"I do not think we are going to agree on this today, and that is okay. I have made my decision, and I am not going to keep debating it right now. I love you, and I am going to [step away / call you later / change the subject]."
