Finding A Daughtering Therapist

July 31st, 2026

How to find a therapist who works with the invisible labor that daughters carry.

Whether you are trying to redefine your role with your parents in adulthood, or making sense of a lifetime spent as the family’s emotional caretaker, peacekeeper, or default caregiver, the right therapist makes a real difference. Not every good therapist is the right fit for this specific work, and you will want to find one who has a specialization in women’s issues within a family.

Look for someone who works with:

  • Adult parent and child relationships, including renegotiating roles and boundaries.
  • Emotional labor, caregiving, parentification, and people-pleasing patterns that so often fall to daughters.
  • Childhood emotional neglect, enmeshment, complex trauma, or attachment, if your relationship was neglectful, controlling, or abusive.
  • How gender and culture shape daughtering.

You can ask them questions about working with adult women who are trying to redefine how they show up as daughters in their families.
