Whether you are trying to build something with your dad in adulthood, or making sense of growing up with a distant, absent, or abusive one, the right therapist makes a real difference. Not every good therapist is the right fit for this specific work. Here is what to look for and how to vet someone before you commit.

How to find the right therapist for father wounds

Look for someone who works with:

  • Adult parent and child relationships
  • Family estrangement, low contact, and reconciliation, without pushing you toward one outcome.
  • Childhood emotional neglect, complex trauma, or attachment, if your father was absent or abusive

Make sure they understand how gender and culture impact these relationships. Gender shapes how a lot of fathers were raised to express care, handle conflict, and show up emotionally, and it shapes what you were allowed to expect from them. Your relationship with your dad was often filtered through his marriage to your other parent. Look for someone who understands these systems and influences.
