How to respond to your family's old stories

If you are dealing with a family that responds with threats, abuse, or attacks on who you are, these are not the scripts for that situation. Take what fits, and change things to fit your voice and situation.

I was a kid in a family that was under a lot of strain. The role I got says more about what was going on in that house than it does about me.

I don't have to fix this by making it my fault. I can let it be uncomfortable for a minute.

That was the role I had in this family. That wasn’t the real me. I know who I am not.

I can see things are tense. I don't think I caused it. I can pause before blaming myself.

I see it differently. I'm not trying to change your mind.
