How to talk about family safety with your therapist.

Safety is one of the most important components of healthy family functioning. Without safety, families cannot enjoy any other positive qualities.

If your family does not feel safe, a therapist can help you identify why you feel unsafe and assist you in finding safety.

Here are some ways to bring up feeling unsafe in your family with your therapist:

  • “I don’t know how to explain this, but my home isn’t safe to be in, and I don’t know what to do.”
  • “My dad gets so mad. He yells and throws things.”
  • “I feel like I’m always walking on eggshells so I don’t upset my mom. We never know what’s going to happen if we upset her.”
  • “Where I live isn’t safe and I always feel on edge. It’s impossible to sleep.”
  • “I have so many bad memories from my childhood. I’m scared to even talk about that. I don’t know if I can handle it.”
